Chapter 3 Reader's Response
Chapter 3 is a classroom research for reading response obtained by data collected by the author to reveal how student readings can be evaluated for educators to know what and how reading can influence students’ development to learn. But the students’ must be ready to engage the reading if not they will not want to read. This chapter is to give teachers ideas and strategies that will support them implementing a good reading response program in their classrooms. The data collection methods and the three categories of responses were easy to follow and understand. A teacher could if the situation is right use these strategies but the teachers must first know the students in their classrooms to implement the findings. Another thing that must be viewed is that schools have policy about contents being taught in the classrooms. What if a student wants to read about explicit characters like rap artist, subjects deemed non-educational, etc. So teachers must work with the students about matters of this kind. Classroom is more like a studio is a good point to make but when reading and response is concerned. If students are learning what they like it will appeal to them and their own intuition takes over. This is not one shoe fits all but learning as it matches the students’ own cognitive development. This assignment is a good one because the author uses both implicit and explicit details to support his ideas and what I get from this are tools to examine to keep records of my process as a teacher and benchmark my instructions around students’ responses and assessments.
